EXTREME COMPETETIVE ANGLING

Many of the approximate 250 000 recreational anglers are not aware that within their midst exists an extreme version of their passion…..competitive shore angling. In the Western Cape there is an association, namely the  Western Cape Shore Angling Association that falls under the auspices of the South African Shore Angling Association ( SAASA ). It is this body's responsibility to organize and control competitive events, nominate and issue provincial colours and ultimately South African colours to its members.

There are 7 clubs in the Western Cape competing to be the ultimate top club. Competitions take place ounce a month and they are of an extremely competitive nature. This does not mean that you have to be a provincial angler. If you want to learn where "Vierkant Klip", "Steenbras Gat" or "Adderley straat" is, you must join a club and learn from anglers who have caught extreme fish for years. Fish feeding patterns, where they feed, what bait they prefer under what conditions? These answers cannot be read in a book. Join a club and practice on the playing field.

All clubs have a program to elevate social anglers to competitive anglers. If you want to catch extreme fish you've got to go extreme. What do you get out of it……. An adrenalin rush like no other! Hook into a 220 kg shark from the beach and you are going to be into a 2 hour fight.

Those who don’t know believe we only target shark. Well that’s wrong. During a competition  it is the weight of the fish that gives the points. We therefore cast big bates that will by nature attract big fish, ala sharks and rays. One point is accrued per 1 kg of weight. Edible fish weight will give you double points. Catch and release is strongly the call of the day. The 2006 / 2007 season ended on 5 May and the new season will start in September 2007. A total of 20 287 kilograms of fish was caught and released in the last season amongst the 7 clubs who competed in the Western Province Rock and Surf angling competitions.
